ARITHMETIC SECTION

This section consists of 29 problems. The questions are simple though time consuming.

1. If a boat is moving in upstream with velocity of 14 km/hr and goes downstream with a velocity of 40 km/hr, then what is the speed of the stream ?

(a) 13 km/hr
(b) 26 km/hr
(c) 34 km/hr
(d) none of these

Ans: A

Let speed of Boat be ‘x’, and speed of stream ‘y’.

When boat moves upstream overall speed is 14 .Equation is x-y=14.For downstream equation is

x+y=40. On solving these 2 equations,we get x as 27 and y as 13. Ans is 13

.

2. Find the value of ( 0.75 * 0.75 * 0.75 - 0.001 ) / ( 0.75 * 0.75 - 0.075 + 0.01)

(a) 0.845
(b) 1.908
(c) 2.312
(d) 0.001

Ans: A

I did not find any shortcut.Just calculate the values.

3. A can have a piece of work done in 8 days, B can work three times faster than the A, C can work five times faster than A. How many days will they take to do the work together ?

(a) 3 days
(b) 8/9 days
(c) 4 days
(d) can,t say

Ans: B

A’s one day’s work----> 1/8

B works 3 times faster .Therefore B’s one day’s work------- > 3/8

C works 5 times faster.Therefore C’s one day’s work------- >5/8

A+B+C=1/8 + 3/8 + 5/8=(1+3+5)/8=9/8

Therefore they will take 8/9 days.



4. A car travels a certain distance taking 7 hrs in forward journey, during the return journey increased speed 12km/hr takes the times 5 hrs.What is the distance travelled

(a) 210 kms
(b) 30 kms
(c) 20 kms
(c) none of these

Ans: B.

Let distance be x kms.During forward journey speed is x/7(bcoz time is 7 hrs)
during return journey speed is increased by 12 kms.Therefore speed in return becomes x/7+12

Equate the distances during return and forward journeys

X=(x/7+12)*5

On solving x=30.i.e.,distance travelled in return journey is 30 kms.
5. Instead of multiplying a number by 7, the number is divided by 7. What is the percentage of error obtained ?

Let the no. be x.if it is multiplied with 7 result is 7x. But it is divided by 7 and the result is x/7,

Percentage error is( 7x-x/7)/(x/7)*100

On solving it comes as 4800%.

Another approach: Ttake 7 as our no.if it is multiplied with 7 it becomes 49,

But it is divided by 7 and it becomes 1.

Percentage error is ((49-1)/1)*100=4800%.

6. Find (7x + 4y ) / (x-2y) if x/2y = 3/2 ?

(a) 6
(b) 8

x/2y=3/2--------- >x=3y. Substitute in above eqn

7(3y) + 4y/(3y-2y)=25y/y=25


7. A man buys 12 lts of liquid which contains 20% of the liquid and the rest is water. He then mixes it with 10 lts of another mixture with 30% of liquid.What is the % of water in the new mixture?
Ans :

In 12 lts of liquid 20% is liquid and 80% is water.i.e., 9.6 lts is water

In 10 lts 70% is water i.e., 7 lts of water.

When they are mixed total volume becomes 12+10=22lts and water content becomes 9.6 + 7=16.6 lts.

Percent of water in mixture is 16.6/22 * 100=75.45%.
8. If a man buys 1 lt of milk for Rs.12 and mixes it with 20% water and sells it for Rs.15, then what is the percentage of gain?

Here the mixing of 20% water is just given to confuse us.

c.p=12 s.p=15 ------> gain%= (15-12)/12 * 100=25%

9. Pipe A can fill a tank in 30 mins and Pipe B can fill it in 28 mins.If 3/4th of the tank is filled by Pipe B alone and both are opened, how much time is required by both the pipes to fill the tank completely ?

work done by both pipes is 1/28 + 1/30=29/420

they take 420/29 mins to completely fill d tank.

Given that 3/4th of tank is already filled.therefore 1/4th is to be filled by both pipes.

420/29mins---- > 1(tank)-------eqn1

? mins------- > 1/4th tank

Divide by 4 on both sides of eqn 1

420/(29*4) mins-----à ¼ tank

105/29 mins= 3.62 mins


10. If on an item a company gives 25% discount, they earn 25% profit. If they now give 10% discount then what is the profit percentage.

11. A certain number of men can finish a piece of work in 10 days. If however there were 10 men less it will take 10 days more for the work to be finished. How many men were there originally?

12. In simple interest what sum amounts of Rs.1120/- in 4 years and Rs.1200/- in 5 years ?

(a) Rs. 500
(b) Rs. 600
(c) Rs. 800
(d) Rs. 900

Ans: C

Simple interest for 1 year=1200 – 1120=80

Therefore principal amount= 1120 – (4*80)= 1120 -320 =800

13. If a sum of money compound annually amounts of thrice itself in 3 years. In how many years
will it become 9 times itself.

(a) 6
(b) 8
(c) 10
(d) 12

Ans A

Let the principal amount be Rs. X

Amount after 3 years

3x=x(1+(r/100))^3

On solving r = (3^(1/3) – 1) * 100.

Amount after y years

9x=x(1 + (3^(1/3)-1)*100/100)^y

On solving above eqns

9 = (3)^(1/3)^y

3^2 = 3 ^ (y/3)

-------- > y=6 years



14. Two trains move in the same direction at 50 kmph and 32 kmph respectively. A man in the slower train
observes the 15 seconds elapse before the faster train completely passes by him.
What is the length of faster train ?

(a) 100m
(b) 75m
(c) 120m
(d) 50m

Ans

Given data is insufficient

However the eqn is 15/(60*60)= (l1+ l2)/(50 – 32).Here either l1 or l2 should have been given.


15. How many mashes are there in 1 squrare meter of wire gauge if each mesh
is 8mm long and 5mm wide ?

(a) 2500
(b) 25000
(c) 250
(d) 250000

Ans B

I square meter=(100cm) * (100cm) (since 1m=100cm)=(100*10mm) * (100 * 10mm) (since 1cm=10mm)

1 sq.mt=1000*1000 sq.mm

Each mesh is 8*5 sq.mm=40 sq.mm
no. of meshes in I sq.mt area is = (1000 * 1000)/40 =25000.
16. x% of y is y% of ?

(a) x/y
(b) 2y

(d) can,t be determined

Ans: C

Here x % of y is x/100 * y = xy/100.

And y % is y/100. With what value should it be multiplied so that result becomes xy/100.

Its obviously x. Ans is x.

17. The price of sugar increases by 20%, by what % should a housewife reduce the consumption of sugar so that expenditure on sugar can be same as before ?

(a) 15%
(b) 16.66%
(c) 12%
(d) 9%

Ans B

Formula is r/(r+100) * 100= 20 /(100+20) * 100=16.66%


18. A man spends half of his salary on household expenses, 1/4th for rent, 1/5th for travel expenses, the man deposits the rest in a bank. If his monthly deposits in the bank amount 50, what is his monthly salary ?

(a) Rs.500
(b) Rs.1500
(c) Rs.1000
(d) Rs. 900

Let monthly salary be x

Total amount spent = x/2 (household) + x/4(rent) + (x/5) (travel)=19x/20

Amount remaining is x/20=50 -------- > x=1000.


20. The population of a city increases @ 4% p.a. There is an additional annual increase of 4% of the population due to the influx of job seekers, find the % increase in population after 2 years ?

Ans: Let initial pop. be x. each year it increases by 4 + 4 += 8%
At the end of 1 year the pop. becomes 1.08x

At the end of 2 years the pop. becomes 1.08 * 1.08x

Percent increase is (1.08 * 1.08x )- x/x * 100 = 1.1664x-x/x * 100 = 16.64% increase

Ans is 16.64 %



21. The ratio of the number of boys and girls in a school is 3:2 Out of these 10% the boys and 25% of girls are scholarship holders. % of students who are not scholarship holders.?

Let the no. of boys and girls be 100. Given ratio is 3:2 . Boys are 60 and girls 40.

90% boys + 75% girls are not scholarship holders = 54 + 30 = 84

Ans is 84%.


22. 15 men take 21 days of 8 hrs. each to do a piece of work. How many days of 6 hrs. each would it take for 21 women if 3 women do as much work as 2 men?

(a) 30
(b) 20
(c) 19
(d) 29

Ans: A

Formula is men 1* days1 * hr1/w = men2 * days2 * hrs2/w (since work is same)

No. of men1=15 , days1 = 21 , hrs1 = 8

Given 21 women and 3women = 2 men . It implies 1 women = 2 / 3 men . Therefore, 21 women = 2/3 * 21 men = 14 men . hence men2 is 14

Hrs 2 =6 and days2=?

Subst. above values in the above eqn --à 15 * 21 * 8/w = 14 * 6 * d2/w

On solving d2=30

23. A cylinder is 6 cms in diameter and 6 cms in height. If 2 spheres of the same size are made from the material obtained, what is the diameter of each sphere?

Ans C

Given Data is not correct. But The approach is equate volumes of spheres and cylinders

Volume of cylinder = pi * r * r *h and volume of sphere = 4/3 * pi * r*r*r.

-------- > pi* 3* 3*6 = 4/3 * pi * r*r*r*x (where x is no. of spheres)
Here x should be given to find r.


24. A rectangular plank (2)1/2 meters wide can be placed so that it is on either side of the diagonal of a square shown below.(Figure is not available)What is the area of the plank?

Ans :7*(2)1/2

25. The difference b/w the compound interest payble half yearly and the simple interest on a
certain sum lent out at 10% p.a for 1 year is Rs 25. What is the sum?

Formula is C.I – S.I =25

Let p be the principal amount

( P( 1+((r/2)/100))^2 - p) – (p * 1 * 10)/100 = 25

On solving p=10000.

26. What is the smallest number by which 2880 must be divided in order to make it into a
perfect square ?

Just substitute d answers and see that the result is a perfect square. For 5 its 576.

27. A father is 30 years older than his son however he will be only thrice as old as the son after 5 years
what is father,s present age ?

Ans: A
Let father’s age be f and son’s be y.

F= s + 30-----à1 eqn

F+5 = 3 (s + 5)------- > eqn 2

On solving above eqns fathers age = 40 years.


28. An article sold at a profit of 20% if both the cost price and selling price would be Rs.20/-,the profit would be 10% more. What is the cost price of that article?

I think this question is wrong.

29. If an item costs Rs.3 in ,99 and Rs.203 in ,00.What is the % increase in price?

(203-3 )/3 * 100 =200/3 %
